Badhuis

Nowadays, average homes in the Netherlands are equipped with a shower or bath. That has not always been the case. For most of history, homes didn’t even have running water. This changed at the beginning of the twentieth century, but taking a shower or bath was still something for the wealthy elite. Most houses did not have a separate laundry room. To do this, one had to go to a public bathhouse.

There were thirteen such bathhouses in The Hague, including this one. This bathhouse was built in 1925 according to a design by the municipal architect A.A. Schadee, who designed many municipal buildings between 1891 and 1927. The municipality contributed to the construction of the bathhouse ‘for the benefit of the working class’. The bathhouse, with two staff houses next to it, is designed in the style of the Haagse School (Hague School) and Haags Expressionisme (Hague Expressionism). The work of architect Schadee is strongly inspired by that of the famous architect Berlage. The two chimneys on top of the bathhouse are special, because they form one of the last pairs of ‘factory chimneys’ in The Hague.

Over the course of the twentieth century, ideas about hygiene and housing facilities changed. Increasingly, washrooms in homes became the standard and the use of bathhouses slowly but surely declined. This bathhouse was able to function for quite a long time, thanks to the ‘Badhuisproject’ (Bathhouse Project), in which the elderly were helped to wash themselves. The bathhouse finally closed in the late 1970s and lost its function.

The building is currently in private hands and is used for after-school day care, sports and there are some classrooms of the De Einder school.
