De Ooievaars

On Beijersstraat you will find an open field. This field was originally constructed as a ‘People’s Playground’ in 1912. From 1912 to 1922, the Jewish club ‘De Ooievaars’ played football here.

The Hague football club ‘De Ooievaars’ was founded in 1911 ‘to make the weak Jewish body flexible and strong and to strengthen the disappearing sense of solidarity’. At that time, The Hague’s Jewish Quarter was plagued by drinking and gambling young people. A football club would keep them off the streets, the founders hoped.

Initially the club was going to be called Vitesse. But when it turned out that there was already a club with that name in Arnhem, the animal that is central to the coat of arms of The Hague was chosen: the stork (in Dutch: ooievaar). The club uniform was yellow-black, just like the HVV club. HVV was numerous national champions and therefore very popular among the Jews of The Hague.

Even before the outbreak of the Second World War, the players of the Jewish football club had to deal with anti-Semitism (discrimination against Jews). In the summer of 1941, De Ooievaars was dissolved due to a decree of the German occupier. Many members of the football club did not survive the war. Before the outbreak of the war, the football club had nine teams. When the war ended, there were only four members left. The rest had been murdered by the Germans.

After the war, some remaining members wanted to re-establish De Ooievaars. The survivors draw strength from the club’s continuation. The club received help from the municipality of The Hague in its re-establishment. Although non-Jews were now also admitted, the club would never lose its Jewish character. In 1986, the football club ‘De Ooievaars’ ceased to exist.
