Ambachtsschool

You are now in the very southern corner of Transvaal. Here there’s a striking building on Veluweplein. From the 1930s to the 1960s, sawing, carpentry and crafting took place in this building. Here boys were trained as blacksmiths, carpenters, furniture makers, house painters, joiners, instrument makers and electricians.

The ambachtschool was a type of school that existed in the Netherlands and Suriname from 1865 to 1968. With the introduction of the Mammoetwet (a set of educational reforms) in 1968, the craft school changed into the Lagere Technische School (Lower Technical School) (LTS).

The building of the craft school was designed in 1932 on behalf of the “Association for the Establishment and Maintenance of Christian Industrial Schools for boys and girls in The Hague and surrounding areas”. It was put into use in 1934. The school was built according to the style of the ‘Nieuwe Haagse School’ (New Hague School). Due to its striking location on the Veluweplein, it has great urban development value.

For a while the school building was used by the Algemene Hindoebasisschool (General Hindu Primary School). The Hague, and Transvaal in particular, has a large Hindu community. Here too there is a special, surprising link with the Netherlands-South Africa relationship. You can find out more about this at Tegelweetjes 9 and 16.
