Noeroel Islam Moskee

At the beginning of Scheeperstraat stands the large Noeroel Islam Mosque. You may have noticed the tall minaret with a green dome before. The Mosque opened in 2002. It is built in Moroccan style. In addition to the minaret, the large dome on the roof and the walled courtyard stand out. The mosque is one of the largest mosques in the Netherlands in terms of surface area!

Noeroel Islam is a Sunni Muslim association, founded in 1975 by Surinamese Muslims. After the influx of Hindustani Muslims from Suriname, the need for their own place of worship arose. After several moves, the community ended up on Scheeperstraat. In addition to the mosque, the building also functions as a meeting place. Although it was founded by Surinamese Muslims, the mosque is also visited by people of Turkish, Moroccan, Syrian, Pakistani and Somali descent. The mosque’s working language is deliberately Dutch, so that everyone feels welcome.
